The Institute offers new hope to tumor patients in their search for ever less invasive and more accurate treatment than afforded by conventional therapies.
NEUROSURGERY AND THE GAMMA KNIFE
Neurosurgeons and neurologists collaborate closely in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the nervous system. The most modern surgical equipment is at their disposal for the removal of brain or spinal cord tumors, the treatment of cerebral haemorrhages or of intervertebral disc herniation – even if nerves in the face, the hands or legs have to be treated surgically. It is vital to avoid injury to the surrounding healthy brain tissue, particularly during surgery of brain tumors. In neurosurgery, therefore, computer-assisted navigation systems which make very high precision possible are used. In addition, the gamma knife provides a system unique throughout Switzerland that permits surgeons to replace or to supplement brain surgery or a course of radiotherapy lasting several weeks. Radiosurgery with the gamma knife is an extremely atraumatic irradiation technique for brain tumors. Irradiation is given in one single session without opening the skull. The specialists at the Gamma Knife Center in Zurich also cooperate with the interdisciplinary team of oncologists to determine the optimal method of treatment.
